Managing Confrontations

What is the main idea of this article?

I think that main idea is author want to talk about how to manage any conflicts, especially finding solution of ritual fighting between individual and people, community or villages, cultures. Although Americans think disputes should be settled by without interference, the author suggest to look at the other cultures where people believe third party is important to resolve conflicts so that they may find new way to manage conflicts.

- How does the author use examples; are they effective, in your opinion?

The author first used examples which show intermediaries are important in some cultures and then talked about cultures where don’t involve third party. In my opinion, these examples are effective because we can see difference how does third party impact to manage conflicts in different situations.

What is the most effective example, in your opinion?

Cockfighting in Bali, for example, is very effective example I think. This example helps to understand that what Americans think individual choice and consequence is inseparable from complex social network in other culture.

- How does the structure of the article support the development of the main idea?

The writer of this article used examples of different cultures to support the main idea and she separated each country’s example by different subtitle. In addition to that she explained how do all these examples related to the main idea as well.

inconvenient truth by Al Gore

I think that Al Gore’s speech continued very long time and very interesting which http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8847562857479496579. I like two parts of paragraph from his speech, where he used idioms, aphorism, comparison and slide show.

First paragraph is where he started talking about his teachers, which was true story. He said “I had a grade school teacher who taught geography by pulling a map of the world down in front of the blackboard. I had a classmate in the sixth grade who raised his hand and he pointed to the outline of the east coast of South America, and he pointed to the west coast of Africa, and he asked, "Did they ever fit together?" And the teacher said, "Of course not! That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard." That student went on to be a drug addict and a never do well. That teacher went on to be a science advisor in the current administration. What gets us into trouble is not what you don’t, it’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so. (Mark Twain)/06.07 minutes/.

Most people don’t like to listen long speech about political issues. But Al Gore used strategy that he talked about between conversations his classmate and his teacher when he was on 6th grade on his speech. When he talked this story, people were funny.

Second paragraph is “But ladies and gentleman, in the next 50 years it’s going to continue to go up. When some of these children who are here are my age, here’s where it’s going to be in less than 50 years. You’ve heard of off to chart” (idiom) 22.30 minutes/ He used computer animation on his speech, specially he showed keynote graphic and he went up by electric ladder when he was talking about second paragraph. It was so exotic because people realize we should be fighting for climate change.

Summary of So dumn much money

The first thing that made me wonder when I came in the Washington DC two months ago from Mongolia was quiet and boring situation of the world’s most powerful country’s capital city. It was shocking to see that Washington DC is small city, which is full of hundreds of foundations, non-profit organizations and firm buildings because I was expecting that the city make decisions on the world future should be busy and big city where “political kitchen” should be hot and boiling. Just after I read Robert Kaiser’s book, now I have a little understanding of American political structure, especially in last three decades after 1980, how lobbyist influence indirectly to decisions and change political process.

In my opinion, author write very honest and brave about inside of American political life, specifically politicians’ “mother’s milk”, in other words, source of the money. The thing named as a corruption or bribery in most other countries named as a lobby in the U.S[1]. The author proves that reason of this “legalized bribery” still existing in this country is because both parties have satisfactory for their interest by Schlossberg and Cassidy’s creative lobbying process.

However Obama administration is trying to find more commonsense approach for this legalized but morally wrong relationship, I couldn’t find more information whether they found perfect way or not. Maybe it’s because of my poor language skills. Yet I’m very thankful for the author for informing about lobby groups in the America and their immoral “inner secret.” Although I don’t think that whole lobby groups are bad.

I’m pragmatic person; so I had two summaries after I read this book. First of all in Mongolian political process by legalizing lobby groups in certain level, we can reduce secret briberies so that public can know who support what and how. In Mongolian condition we have to accept industrial and small-middle business lobby groups, not the big financial supporters like the mining, energy or alcohol, cigarette and medicine branches.

Second, recently Mongolia create own lobby group in Washington DC and made an agreement with the U.S. government to get three types of supports. Therefore I think we can practice that lobby group and use it in Mongolian politics. If it’s really possible to influence on decision, which would be useful for small Mongolia, using lobby groups, why can’t we use it. I think it’s possible.

TV ads

Modern

In the 1950s average advertisement’s time was one minute.

My view:

May be viewership interested all TV ads which is long time continued. Because they can’t change lot of channel and they’re not boring while early television era.

Average time

Today a majority of advertisements time is 15-30 seconds on televisions.

My view:

Now, I think that viewership is busy like workaholic. So, Advertising agencies reformed TV ads time for viewership due.

When early television era video makers were making hand drawn traditional animation. Also the first coast-to-coast color broadcast came on January 1, 1954.

Animation

Now, all video makers use computer animation for TV ads. Finally, we watch TV ads, which used 3D animation on TV.

Just minority of viewership, who are 11 percent of households of the all Americans used to watch TV ads in 1950. Otherwise TV ads advertising just for few thousand wealth people this time.

TV viewership

Modern TV ads focus to all American citizens. There is no discrimination of class and income. Beside people can watch TV advertising on own phone and internet website of televisions.

The music in both periods of commercials is distinctive. Obviously the blue and jazz style music is very popular and widely used in almost every piece of ad in 1950s. Now I watch to this TV ads I feel watch comedy program.

Music

Modern TV ads music has many styles. Because I think that musicians to make music which is like target audience of TV ads.
